How we decide what a building needs

Every estimate starts with looking at the building rather than at a price list. Cavity depth, moisture exposure, how the assembly is built and how the space is used all change the answer, and they change it more than most people expect.

A shallow wall in a converted cottage and a standard framed wall in a new subdivision house are different problems, even though both are "walls". So we look first, then recommend — and sometimes the recommendation is that the money is better spent somewhere else in the building entirely.

Insulation and fire protection are frequently the same conversation. Foam left exposed in a basement or mechanical room generally needs a covering between it and the space, which is why our fireproofing and thermal barrier work so often follows on from an insulation job.

Which service you probably need

If the complaint is a cold room, a draught you cannot locate or a heating bill that keeps climbing, the answer is usually attic insulation and air sealing before anything else — the ceiling plane is where a heated building loses most, and it is the cheapest surface to reach. If the problem is a crawl space, a rim joist, a cathedral ceiling or any cavity too shallow to take a batt, that is spray foam insulation territory, because it seals and insulates in one pass where a cut piece of anything would leave gaps. Which of the two foams belongs in a given assembly is a decision made on site — closed cell or open cell explains what decides it.

Where the cavity is regular, dry and accessible, fibreglass batt insulation does the same job for less, provided it is installed properly. We quote it often, and the jobs we talk people out of covers the situations where it is the better recommendation.
